File uploads in chat

Visitors can attach images and PDFs to a message so the agent can answer questions about what they send.

Supported files and limits

Maximum size

20 MB each
  • A visitor can attach up to five files to one message.
  • PDFs need selectable text. Scanned, image-only PDFs may not contain readable text.
  • A message cannot be sent until uploads and document text extraction finish.

How visitors attach a file

  1. Select the attachment button beside the chat input.
  1. Choose one or more supported files.
  1. Wait until every file finishes uploading, then send the message.
  1. Remove a file before sending with the remove button on its preview.

Model compatibility

The attachment button only offers formats supported by the selected model. Models marked Vision can read images; models marked Files can read PDFs. The model picker shows these capabilities for every model.
💡
If the attachment control is missing, choose a model with the required Vision or Files capability under Settings → General.

Privacy

Tell visitors not to upload secrets or regulated personal data unless your policies permit it. Uploaded chat files use temporary access links so Chatwith and the selected model can process the message.
